The Icelandic Meteorological Institute has decided to evacuate buildings in Neskaupstaður as a precautionary measure.
The area to be evacuated is partially below the avalanche dam. This area is to be evacuated anyway because the snow is loose. In the event of another avalanche, there is a chance of spillage over the dam due to the looseness of the snow. There is no risk of an avalanche causing damage below the dam – this is a precautionary measure.
Rescue workers in Neskaupstaður and Seyðisfjörður are currently working on evacuation. It is clear that no casualties have resulted from the avalanche in Neskaupstaður that hit several buildings this morning.
There is an avalanche risk in Seyðisfjörður, though no avalanches are known to have occurred. Buildings are to be evacuated in the danger zone, see below.
